Most consulting business plans are 30-page documents written for investors — and never looked at again. A one-page plan you actually use beats a 30-page plan you don't. Here's the template, section by section, with examples.

The Template

6 sections, one page, ready to fill in

Copy this structure into a document. Fill in each section with your specific information. Don't write more than 2–3 sentences per section — the constraint is the feature.

Section 1

Positioning Statement

Who you help, what problem you solve, and the outcome you deliver — in one sentence.

Example

I help B2B SaaS companies under $10M ARR build a repeatable outbound pipeline that fills their sales team's calendar with qualified demos.

💡

Be specific about the buyer and the outcome. "I help businesses grow" is not positioning — it's a category. The more specific you are, the easier it is for referrals to find you.

Section 2

Target Clients

Who buys from you? Industry, company size, stage, and the person who signs the check.

Example

Series A–B B2B SaaS companies ($2M–$10M ARR) with a sales team of 3–15. Buyer is the VP of Sales or CRO. They've tried hiring an SDR and it didn't work — they need a system, not another body.

💡

Name the role that feels the pain and can approve budget. If the person feeling the pain can't write a check, you need to identify who can — and whether they will.

Section 3

Three Productized Offers

Three offers at different price points — an entry-level audit, a standard engagement, and a premium package. Each has a fixed scope, fixed deliverables, and fixed price.

Example

1. Pipeline Diagnostic Audit — $2,500 (2 weeks, audit + report) 2. Outbound System Build — $8,500 (4 weeks, playbook + scripts + training) 3. Fractional SDR Leadership — $5,000/month (ongoing retainer, 90-day minimum)

💡

Productized offers have fixed scope and fixed price. They're not custom proposals — they're packages the prospect can buy immediately. The audit is your foot in the door; the retainer is your goal.

Section 4

Pricing Strategy

How you price your work — hourly, project-based, or retainer — and the rate range for your niche.

Example

Project-based for audits and builds ($2,500–$8,500). Monthly retainer for ongoing work ($3,000–$5,000). No hourly billing — it punishes efficiency and caps income. Rates benchmarked against RevOps consultants with 5–8 years of experience.

💡

Price on the value of the outcome, not the hours you'll spend. A $8,500 engagement that saves the client $200K in wasted SDR salaries isn't expensive — it's a rounding error. Use the rate calculator to anchor your pricing in real market data.

Section 5

Client Acquisition Plan

How you'll find your first 3 clients in 30 days — warm network, cold outreach, content, or referrals.

Example

Week 1: Contact 20 people in my warm network (former colleagues, managers, industry friends). Week 2: Send 30 personalized cold emails to VP Sales at Series A–B SaaS companies. Week 3: Follow up on all cold outreach + post 2 LinkedIn articles about outbound pipeline mistakes. Week 4: Book 3 discovery calls and send proposals.

💡

Your warm network converts 10x better than cold outreach. Start there. Send 30–50 cold emails per week with a 2-step follow-up sequence. The math: 50 emails → 5 replies → 2 calls → 1 client. You need volume.

Section 6

90-Day Action Plan

What you'll do in the first 90 days — week by week, with milestones.

Example

Days 1–30: Land client #1. Send 100+ cold emails, follow up on 20 warm contacts, book 5 discovery calls, send 3 proposals. Days 31–60: Deliver client #1, land client #2. Collect a testimonial from client #1. Days 61–90: Deliver client #2, land client #3. Start building referral pipeline from happy clients.

💡

The first 30 days are purely outbound — nobody knows you exist yet. Days 31–60 are delivery + continued outreach. By day 90, you should have 2–3 clients and your first testimonial. Don't stop outreach until you have 3 clients — one is a fluke, three is a business.

Common Mistakes

5 mistakes that make your plan useless

A business plan only works if you use it. These mistakes turn a useful tool into a document that gathers dust.

1

Writing a 20-page document nobody reads

Traditional business plans are written for investors, not for you. A consulting business plan should be one page — it's a decision-making tool, not a document. If it's too long to read in 2 minutes, you won't use it.

2

Skipping positioning to 'keep options open'

'I can help any business with anything' is not a plan — it's the absence of one. Your positioning narrows your market but makes you findable and referable. You can always expand later; you can't be found if you're invisible.

3

No pricing strategy — just 'I'll figure it out per project'

Without a pricing framework, you'll undercharge on every project. Set your rate range upfront, anchor it to market benchmarks, and stick to it. Per-project pricing without a baseline leads to scope creep and eroding margins.

4

No client acquisition plan — just 'I'll network'

'Networking' is not a plan. Write down how many people you'll contact, which channels you'll use, and what you'll say. A plan with numbers (50 cold emails/week, 5 warm contacts/week) gets executed. A vague intention doesn't.

5

Planning for year 3 before landing client #1

Don't plan your team structure, office space, or scaling strategy before you have revenue. The first 90 days have one goal: land 3 paying clients. Everything else is a distraction until that happens.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A consulting business plan template is a pre-structured one-page document that covers the six essentials of a consulting practice: positioning, target clients, productized offers, pricing strategy, client acquisition plan, and a 90-day action plan. Instead of starting from a blank page, you fill in each section with your specific information — and the template ensures you don't skip the parts that matter most.
